Nike Playground

At the centre the launch of the new Sportscene flagship store in Sandton was the idea of a full basketball court the Nike Playground a proper playing surface that would transform a sneaker store into a place where culture can happen. Our role on the project was two-fold: give the court its own identity, and make the visuals that would live on the massive LED screen and belong to nowhere else.

Raw materials

We pulled apart what's actually inside a Nike shoe and rebuilt each part as an abstract form we could direct character first, sneaker second.

And then bring them all back to together again

Inspired by street culture

To contrast with the light colourful section of the Nike materials, we though to bring a night time grit to the parts of the piece that were more classicaly Sportscene-inspired.

THE BRANDING

The court needed a mark that could live on a ball as easily as on a wall. We drew a custom typographic identity Playground built to wrap, emboss and animate.

our approach

The pipeline ran across Cinema 4D and Houdini, each doing what it's best at. Look development, layout and the cleaner hard-surface and brand elements were handled in C4D; the material behaviour the foam's porosity, the inflation and creasing, the collisions where the four elements come together was built procedurally in Houdini.

the event

Launch night saw some pretty fierce competition on the court. Nothing but net.
